A PRISONER transport vehicle donated to the Beikut Correctional Institution on Bougainville will increase security and the standing of the local authority.

Donated by the Australian government, the K196,000 vehicle will be used to transport detainees between the Beikut Correctional Institution, police station and the courts.

Commander of the Beikut Correctional Institution Senior Inspector Jackson Gubag said the vehicle had been well received by the local community during its first outing in Buka.

“The new truck increased pride in our warders, and the profile of Correctional Services here in Buka,” he said.

The prison has not had reliable access to secure transport for prisoners for more than six months before the donation, causing delays and increasing risks of preventable escapes.

The news came as a series of new buildings were opened in the South Bougainville town of Buin in a bid to improve access to law and justice services.

The new buildings, provided through the partnership between the Australian, Autonomous Bougainville and PNG governments, include two three-bedroom staff houses, police accommodation for police men and women and other support services for survivors of family and sexual violence.
