WITH plans to target the Chinese travel market, the PNG Tourism Promotion Authority (PNGTPA) opened its inaugural office in Shanghai in February.
Through the Shanghai office PNGTPA has successfully participated in China’s leading travel shows like the Guangzhou International Travel Fair, Shanghai Diving Resort Travel (DRT) Expo and the China International Travel Mart in Kunming.
PNGTPA said at the Shanghai DRT Expo, Papua New Guinea received an award for ‘Best Reef Diving Destination for 2015’. Shanghai office account manager Cynthia Ye said the response and feedback from travel shows has been very positive with many agents and wholesalers expressing interest in selling PNG as a destination.
PNGTPA travel brochures, leaflets and banners are now available in Chinese.
These are complemented by a PNG travel website with information pages on China’s dominant social media sites WeChat and Weibo – all of which has made access to travel information about PNG easier for the Chinese travel trade market.
In November 2015, the Shanghai office brought in its first group of Chinese travel agents and wholesalers for a fam trip, the company said.
The group of six travelled to Rabaul, Kimbe and Madang and were reportedly impressed with what Papua New Guinea had to offer.
