OK TEDI Mining Limited (OTML) marked the 2015 National Mining Safety Week (NMSW) with a focus on the workplace.

OTML said unlike previous years where a public exposition was held, this year’s focus was back in the workplace, where presentations on various health and safety topics were conducted including a mock emergency rescue exercise at the mine.

The theme for this year’s NMSW was ‘live incident free every day’.

OTML said the plan this year was to make OTML workplaces, risk-focused, relevant and at the same time engaging.

A four kilometre walkathon was held on Saturday 21 March to kickstart the NMSW activities followed by presentations on topics relating to seat belt safety, health and wellness, domestic violence and food safety.

OTML said a mock emergency rescue exercise was held on 27 March at the mine by OTML’s asset protection department-fire rescue team.

Employees were also given tours of the various mine and mill operational areas while competitions for the most innovative idea, safest worker, safest shift/team and best housekeeping in either an office or workshop were held, the company said.

OTML’s two operation sites, Kiunga and Bige also held various activities to mark the annual week-long safety activity.
