AS PLATINUM sponsors of the 2015 Pacific Games, OK Tedi Mining (OTML) officially launched its provincial celebration site in Tabubil on 4 July 2015.

OTML managing director Peter Graham opened the site in front of more than 3,000 people, which included OTML employees and their families, contractor partners, nearby mine villages and other government dignitaries.

Mr Graham said the celebration site will provide the public an opportunity to watch the Games live and support Team PNG.

“Not everyone can make it to Port Moresby to watch the Games, so we have brought the Games closer to home so that you can watch and support your favourite athletes and teams with the rest of the Tabubil community,” he said.

The Games will be screened each day at the Tabubil indoor stadiumOTML hosted training camps for the PNG boxing team in Tabubil on four occasions where the team used the company’s modern training facilities to prepare for the Games.

“OTML’s support towards PNG hosting the 2015 Pacific Games and preparing PNG athletes reflects our commitment to improving sports in PNG and help expose PNG’s largely talented but less known athletes and sportsmen and women,” he said.

As a result of the sponsorship, selected young locals from Western Province were picked to participate as volunteers during the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, where they will experience this once in a lifetime event, Mr Graham said.

In June 2014, OTML hosted the Games mascot, Tura the Kokomo to promote the Games and its sponsorship and in April this year, OTML, the Tabubil community and communities along the Kiunga-Tabubil Highway took part in the nation-wide Oil Search Pacific Games baton relay.

In addition OTML has supported the PNG Sports Foundation and Olympic Committee during the South Pacific Games in Fiji 2003, the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, the Mini South Pacific Games in Palau 2005, the Beijing Olympics 2008 and the London Olympics 2012.

OTML was also a bronze sponsor of the PNG Kumuls in their 2008 World Cup campaign.
