PNG Ports Corporation (PNGPCL) has appointed Ian Hayden-Smart as its new chief operating officer.

In his new role, Mr Hayden-Smart will oversee PNGPCL’s 15 ports across Papua New Guinea and will work closely with key PNGPCL staff, management and stakeholders to deliver a number of major infrastructure projects.

These include the Port Moresby Port relocation, Portion 508 project in Lae, the soon-to-be-completed Lae tidal basin project plus other port infrastructure development projects.

PNGPCL chief executive Stanley Alphonse said Mr Hayden-Smart’s work behind the scenes had greatly benefited the company over the years.

“I am confident that he will bring added value as a full-time employee of PNGPCL,” he said.

Mr Hayden-Smart had been involved with PNGPCL in an advisory capacity in the area of strategy and management for close to five years.

He has an in-depth knowledge of PNGPCL’s operations and corporate strategies and already has an established working relationship with the executive management team.

“We are pleased to have secured his expertise for this challenging role,” Mr. Alphonse stressed.

Prior to his involvement with PNGPCL, Mr. Hayden-Smart was Commercial Manager with Steamships Shipping and held various senior management positions with shipping lines, port operators and infrastructure companies in New Zealand.

He has a Masters degree majoring in finance and marketing, and brings a wealth of experience to the company, PNGPCL said in an announcement.
